Updated with Reuters The number of Americans living below the poverty line stood at 49.1 million people in 2010, an unprecedented level according to statistics relaased today by the Census Bureau.

This figure differs from the federal government's latest estimate, which reported in September to 46.2 million Americans in poverty . But the calculation of the Census Bureau integrates data is larger and the poverty to 24,343 dollars a year for a family with two children (against 22,113 dollars for the formal definition).
In total, the Census Bureau finds that a national poverty rate of 16% of the total population (15.1% against the government). It shows a decline in the poverty rate among children and blacks, but an increase among whites, Asians and Hispanics as well as among the elderly population, where the increase in health spending budgets strike .
